The Cart and His Doubts https://skyson.design.blog/2020/03/30/the-cart-and-his-doubts/

I like how you took this with a grain of salt, and you don’t completely disregard Descrates, however you don’t take it to the extreme either. The passage and your blog both made me think of if we doubt everything sensory since our senses have previously deceived us, it would take so much to live life, imagine pondering the truth behind each and every meal. However I agree that to grow as human beings we need to be willing to change our opinions based on knowledge gained, and I think we should each fall somewhere in the middle of doubting everything and never questioning at all, because to ponder and doubt each and everything we run into in the world would be a daunting and exhausting task.

I completely agree with your closing statement, I also feel as if I am doing my best to make my decisions and when I went deeper into thinking this way I got depressed as well. Human circumstances is a depressing topic and I personally feel like in order to keep myself from loosing sanity in my everyday life, I can’t think about these things. The conclusion I’ve come to is that free will or not, I still have just this life, and it would be a pity to sit around pondering these things, as I don’t have the heart of a philosopher, and that it would be more beneficial, personally, to enjoy my time left.

I completely agree, the movie has so many loopholes and all everything seems to happen by perfect chance. When we were watching the movie I couldn’t understand how she only had one copy of the game, especially since there was so much publicity and money riding on it, and especially since she was using such fragile hardware. I can understand the movies correlation in helping us to learn the onion analogy for the cave, however I also don’t feel it encompasses all of the Allegory of the Cave, especially since there is no going back in the cave, and no one refusing to believe there is more.

I still think it’s so cool that you personally know the artist, and that you were able to ask a question to help deepen your interpretation of the piece. I feel like art is often disregarded because people cannot understand the background and depth, however if everyone were to have the chance to ask artists questions art would be much better interpreted by everyone. But this is impossible, and because of this I agree with your closing statement that its hard to fit all art into three categories, because it is difficult to define all art.

I completely agree with you, another thing I was thinking about while reading this was that art outlasts the artist, the intended audience, and the time frame. So art that was powerful centuries ago may not be as powerful to us, and it may not make us feel anything at all. Paintings that were scandalous and unheard of centuries ago, such as the Mona Lisa, does not give us the intended interpretation because the time where this was groundbreaking is long over, instead this is just an old, important painting, and while we may understand the meaning and history behind it, we will never feel just what the artist intended.
Dark Souls, a True Masterpiece https://matthendricksblog.wordpress.com/2020/03/22/dark-souls-a-true-masterpiece-of-art/

People are always very quick to put down video games as a whole, for no reason, and in the process have ignored and downplayed the artistic qualities of video games. To me, if anything, video games are a very important form of art! Creators are able to create whatever type of world, music, characters, etc, which is basically creating fantasy worlds for everyone to share. To add onto your argument that video games are art, and to be basic, Undertale is what I would say is the highest praised artsy mainstream games, which has an amazing soundtrack. Music in video games is a key artistic element, another example being Celeste, which has a phenomenal soundtrack. But I do agree with you, Dark Souls is art, and it isn’t my type of game but I am still able to appreciate it.

I agree with Lauren, you really broke down the quote nicely and helped me see it from a different angle. I don’t fully agree with MacIntyre anymore, identifying myself with a fictional character or story is the same as identifying myself with my, technically fiction, memories so whats the harm?
Poetics; Aristotle https://matthendricksblog.wordpress.com/2020/03/11/poetics-aristotle/

I also wanted to add that imitation is how we learn how to survive in the world around us and has probably given us more traits than we think. If a young child sees his mom terrified of spiders, he will probably be scared of spiders. This is because when we are younger we soak up information like a sponge, and if mom is scared of spiders, they must be bad, which can threaten survival, so the child develops this phobia as well. We are also more or less likely to smoke, by naturally imitating what our parents do. By growing up and seeing my father and other figures in my life smoke cigarettes, I grew up just to smoke cigarettes. Now it is a case by case, because I did stopped smoking about two weeks later because its expensive and it made me cough a lot, but imitation plays a huge roll in child development and therefore has made us who we are.
Plato Republic; the Hierarchy of Imitation https://matthendricksblog.wordpress.com/2020/02/26/plato-republic-hierarchy-of-imitation/

I agree with Plato that art is an imitation, but I don’t see it with the negative connotation he does. The truth of the matter is we are the working class, and even if we are what society deems as successful with a shiny car, big house, and every luxury available to the consumers, we are still slaving for a corporation, or other structure which takes in a large sum of money never to be seen again. We are constantly distracted and disillusioned to the media, often not knowing much about the world other than about our own country. I could keep going but the truth of the world we live in and the human condition is boring and depressing, so I would rather not spend my life seeking truth, and constantly remembering that. So instead I would much rather look at some art, or imitations, about what I wished life was like, for my own well being, which is where I disagree with Plato.

I enjoyed how you depicted Leonardo looking in the mirror and looking back at a villain. I never thought of it that way and I think it really tied your argument together.

I completely agree, and honestly watching my boyfriend skateboard is like watching him play guitar, which music is his art, he always makes the same faces and puts in the same focus. I feel like most people just limit art to classical mediums of art and its upsetting that most people and their artistic expressions go ignored because of that.

I agree with you, there’s no way we don’t have some degree of freewill. I enjoyed your personal examples and I can relate to getting snappy with my boyfriend.

I personally feel like we are somewhere on a spectrum between determinism and free will, and that its pointless to argue between two unrealistic extremities. Some things are predetermined, like brushing your teeth, you don’t WANT to do it but you will still do it, however free will is also skipping brushing teeth every now and then because of waking up late or something else, which is a decision we make, however it is autopilot for us to do things like brush our teeth so I feel things like that are predetermined.

I’ve noticed that a lot of local artists here commonly use the Sacramento skyline or other “symbols” of Sacramento in their art and I feel like skylines and such are very overlooked in terms of art.
